'The Queen Means Different Things To Different People' Activist Says - The ReidOut - MSNBC

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday peacefully at home in Scotland after a remarkable 70-year reign. We cannot talk about the British monarchy without confronting the colonial horrors of this period. Yet, while Queen Elizabeth II, as an institution and an icon, reigned during the decline of the British empire, she also worked assiduously to develop the peaceful Commonwealth of Nations. Joy Reid and her panel examine the complex life of one of the most revered monarchs in history. - Aired on 09/08/2022.

she represented something unchanging in a rapidly changing world, especially a rapidly changing UK with immigration from all parts of the Commonwealth. It's radically different from the country she inherited from her father in the early 50s.

Charles seems to want to scale back "the firm" so it's in line with other constitutional monarchies in Europe. He's got his work cut out for him and he's going to have a hard time overcoming threadbare tradition.

(I always loved her "put your eye out" bright, Easter egg colored outfits, even thought I knew the purpose was a serious one. She needed to be found quickly in a crowd if anything came up)

MSNBC has switched to British news at this hour and they've been not just about the incredible history, but about a family and a country in mourning.

and of course that's how most people feel about at least part of their extended family.

During 2020 and the lockdown in NM that affected everything but the supermarket, I watched a lot of videos, a lot of them from the UK and concerning the class system. The Queen was regularly excoriated, "All that money and she collects glass animals. Glass animals!" and "people who have visited say she's naff," meaning tacky with absolutely no discernible taste and refinement.

Still, she represented 70+ years of absolute stability and that is what will be sorely missed, they can no longer count on her being there to admire or criticize.
