Bill's guests answer viewer questions after the show.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Trace Adkins (5:20), entire panel discussion with Jon Meacham and Julia Loffe (15:56), Bill's "funny bit" (33:26), and includes the opening part of New Rules (45:33). It won't last long, as usual:

(31,204 posts)Early moments of the panel discussion are chilling. Maher reported:
1/3 of Americans would prefer a strong, unelected leader over a weak elected one.
35% think presidents should be able to remove judges.
34% think presidents should be able to prosecute members of the news media.
Maher: "We teach bullshit."
Favorite line (from the funny bit): "I'm meh as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore." Creative segment IMO.

(206,157 posts)I always like presidential historians and I wasn't sure who Julia Ioffe was - then I remembered! She's an American journalist who was born in Russia, so knows a lot about that country and was making the rounds awhile back. I wish they'd mentioned that when they announced the guests.
And I agree that those revelations are chilling. We thought we'd dodged a bullet when we were rid of TFG, but now he's leading the news and causing chaos more than ever! I sure hope that the January 6th Committee has more than enough goods on him by now that they've passed on to DOJ.
Not to mention, I also agree that our education system is in trouble. We need to be able to teach history without interference or bias - going to school in this country has never faced such challenges. My 9th grade Social Studies teacher talked about the Civil Rights Movement quite a bit and now I'm grateful for it. But can they teach that today??
I also liked Bill's "funny bit," one of his best, and I also liked this week's New Rules. Thanks for weighing in! Which reminds me, I never did check out Overtime!

(31,204 posts)"they" don't want history, and civics, even taught. Impossible nationally, but not regionally, including private education, and certain religious and charter organizations -- just enough to perpetuate their dark policies and elect their bought politicians.
I believe "they" plan long-term strategies like this -- some decades in the works, even as far back as Reagan.
Overtime is worth watching IMO. I skipped over the first guest.
Thanks again for posting the bootleg version. Until I resubscribe to HBO it's the only way to catch whole show. And the panel discussion this week was truly first rate. I could listen to Jon Meacham all day.

(206,157 posts)And then I remembered that she was in great demand when the Russians invaded Ukraine because of her background. But she's equally savvy on current events, and I completely agree with her!
And I initially skipped over the first guest, too - when I saw who it was, I was afraid it would turn viewers like us off - but Bill challenged him and he wasn't that bad, took it with good humor. Bill asked him who won the last election and he gave the correct answer...
And the guest I liked most was Jon Meacham as well. I'm a fan of all the presidential historians (I once met Doris Kearns Goodwin in person, went to a lecture/book signing and she signed my book!)
So don't worry about resubscribing to HBO anytime soon. I've been posting "Real Time" since 2017 and I know that not everyone here has HBO or cable - or even TV.

(11,995 posts)Those folks were probably always thinking that way, but thanks to Trump, we now have to live with the knowledge that they exist.
