having had the opportunity to be in the studio audience of a Mike Douglas Show taping here in Philly back in 1976, I know they pre-tape for later broadcast. And in that show's case, I think the tapings were done weeks before that actual (daily) show finally aired. Where I think with Colbert, because the format is to keep "current" with the news of the day, it is obviously taped during the day for broadcast that night...
So in this case, Fauci apparently got his variant booster shot yesterday just like me (and I got my flu shot with it)! 
I remember one time when there was breaking news when Colbert was taping his monologue. Because he tries to be current with the news, he ditched the script and ad libbed the rest! 
And I think Dr. Fauci showed an exceptional sense of humor!
