While stopping the shit at the border is good, it's just not enough. Street drugs are getting extremely hazardous and most are being laced with varying amounts of fentanyl, even Mexican pot has been found adulterated with it.
If you want to stop this crisis, there are rational steps to take, and they don't include a war against human behavior.
First, make Narcan over the counter, right out on the shelf, no questions asked and no paper trail generated. No one should OD because it wasn't available to them or to their friends and family.
Second, go into production of the various drugs of choice, clean supplies with reliable dosages. Undercut the black market price on them. Yes, those need to generate a paper trail because the success of that will be shown by the number of people who start to taper themselves down, something shown to be the case in other programs. Take the profit out of drugs and drive the gangs out of business.
Third, decriminalize cannabis. Tax it but undercut the black market. One thing shown to reduce opiate use is easily available cannabis.
What we are doing is not working. The War on Drugs just got us more and worse drugs and it morphed into a war on American citizens who use them for one reason or another. It has also been used by the right as an excuse to limit civil rights. It's time to try something else. What I've suggested will reduce harm, generate revenue, and maybe make this country safer.
