Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 10/14/22

Last edited Sat Oct 15, 2022, 06:04 PM - Edit history (1)

Monologue: The Pelosi Punch

Bill reacts to the top stories of the week, including the bombshell conclusion of the January 6th hearings.

Benjamin Netanyahu on Anti-Semitism

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joins Bill to discuss the resurgence of anti-Semitism around the globe. His new memoir, "Bibi: My Story" is available October 18th, 2022.

Microdosing for Moms

Moms across the country are microdosing psychedelics just to get through the day. It's so popular that there's a magazine just for them: Good Housetripping.

Capitol Punishment?

Neil deGrasse Tyson and Michael Smerconish join Bill to discuss the damning revelations from the final January 6th Commission hearings.

New Rule: Republican Idiocracy

Part of the appeal of a Herschel Walker or a Donald Trump is that it says to Democrats: “Do you see how much we don’t want what you’re selling?

Overtime: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michael Smerconish

Bill Maher and his guests answer viewer questions after the show.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with former Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu (6:51), entire panel discussion with Michael Smerconish and Neil deGrasse Tyson (16:45), Bill's "funny bit" (33:36), and includes the opening part of New Rules (45:42). It won't last long, as usual:

1. It was great to have Tyson giving scientific facts to Maher's nonsense

Yes, about the reaction to the pandemic. This is what we knew and this was the best way to react. Hindsight is always 20/20.

He did not mention the suffering of the first victims - unable to breath with the medical profession helpless in how to handle this.

So, yes, ACT score are low, kids are anxious, many drive like crazy and perhaps school lockdown was over reacting but what if it were not?

Just watching that part via the repeat since I nodded off and missed the beginning. And Bill ought to know better than to argue science with Neil deGrasse Tyson! He really put Bill in his place regarding Covid - Bill was anxious to "open up" early on, then he got it. Tyson did not. He had to cancel his show for 2 weeks as well as his standup engagements and he was not happy. Smerconish was fine, too.

3. The states with the highest per capita death rates were both red states

where them pointy headed libruls at the CDC got largely ignored: Nebraska and Florida. Yep, they're #1 and #2 in deaths per capita. One is high population and one is low population. I think we have a pretty good idea what didn't work and Tyson missed a golden opportunity there. I do wish somebody would bring that up and knock Maher off that particular soapbox.

Another one he needs to be knocked off is blaming the "whiny" left for the right wing culture wars. Bill, lemme 'splain this to you: they're not picking up on the kids you love to hate, they are inventing stuff to be outraged at and a lot of the stuff you're whining about isn't on their radar, something that seems to shift every couple of weeks. If it's not an aborted embryo crying out in pain and getting snuffed by a heartless doctor, it's Satanic Panic---and yes, the fools are bringing that one back. Culture warriors don't think like you do, Bill, in fact few think at all, they just react and the stupider the story, the more they react to it. That's who bozos like Walker appeals to and there's no way anyone on our side wants to play that game.

4. I agree that Tyson missed a chance, since Bill has been wrong all along on that particular issue

My impression is that Tyson is too good humored. Didn't Bill bring up Sweden as a success story for "herd immunity?" I seem to remember reading just the opposite.

I was glad that he went after Walker, something we can all obviously agree on. But I agree with you that there's no point in playing that game - the RW seems to invent the outrage of the week. But the fact that Walker's even running truly boggles my mind. Howard Dean was on MSNBC earlier tonight and whenever I see him I can't help my disbelief that this intelligent qualified candidate was brought down by something so minor compared to the cringeworthy actions of the candidates - like Walker - of today.

7. Yes, the Swedish experiment was a disaster

because they killed off a lot of their older citizens and more than a few of their workers.

The only way true "herd" immunity can be achieved is through vaccination. In the beginning, when no vaccine was available, the worst thing to do was to look the other way and pretend it didn't exist as a deadly threat. Turns out that was a good way to end up dead.

I imagine Maher has a bug up his butt about masks because they make his makeup run and interfere with toking up. He's turning into an old coot who hates young whippersnappers. It's really none of his business why they're wearing masks. I'm sure some like the relative anonymity. Others might have felt feverish when they woke up and are taking no chances. Not his circus, not his monkeys.

6. Death rate in general, or Covid related?

One can say that with so many older people in Florida it will have a high death rate.

Maher said that Covid related death was the same in CA and in FL and I wonder whether this is true.

8. From Covid

and type of population didn't seem to make a huge difference, beyond higher death rates in all POC, which might be as atributable to social and economic factors more than anything else.

Maher was quoting either monthly or year to date raw death stats. It was hard as hell to find tracking from the beginning of the pandemic, didn't keep the site, can't find it now.

I updated the OP. I went through 3 of them this week before I found a decent one which is unusual, but you never know how long they'll last.

11. I have to admit I'm a bit shocked at Neil de Grasse Tyson's, well, wrongness

Seeing NdgT echoing the 50's/60's lie about how hydrogen bombs are "clean" and radiation-free compared to fission bombs makes me want to take a swig of mouthwash myself. This lie was finally killed when Howard Morland uncovered and published the "secret" of the H-bomb in 1979. The H-bomb derives 80% of its energy output from the fissioning of depleted (opposite of weapons-grade) uranium in the bomb's casing, catalyzed by the insane neutron flux of the fusion secondary. H-bombs are if anything much dirtier than fission bombs. And this has been known to anyone in the general public who cares to find out for 40 years. I think the guy means well but he has been out of his depth ever since Carl Sagan's mantle was dropped on him.

12. I had wished that he'd gone a lot farther in his criticism of Bill's views of Covid
Sat Oct 15, 2022, 07:13 PM

Same thing happened with Max Brooks. But you're right, this misinformation was more important - though I don't think either Bill or Smerconish got it so the subject was dropped.

13. Yes, there was definitely that too

Bill has always been a bit nutty himself on the Covid stuff. Although he is probably right that Neil has had it. A coworker was recently told by his doctor that, basically, everyone gets it semi-regularly but those that are going to die of it have done so and those of us who are left just get blood clots, which form a longer-term slow moving problem. Which is why that hospital still requires masks for all staff and visitors, and why Bill is wrong in his ultimate conclusion.

I think Neil's big problem is that he doesn't know the limits of his own knowledge. Sagan had the same problem, but not nearly as bad. Neil has gotten used to pontificating on anything if he's asked, and being regarded as the sage of the ages when he does whether he really knows anything or not. And increasingly often, it's not.

14. He's never had anyone with a medical background on, that I recall, to discuss Covid
Sat Oct 15, 2022, 08:06 PM
Oct 2022

Not surprising since Bill has always downplayed it - when he got it he was already vaxxed so experienced no symptoms except to be annoyed he had to quarantine and miss his shows. So the only ones who have criticized his views are Tyson and Max Brooks - and both finally backed off. But the sad truth is that it's still with us and people are still dying.

Bill never shows his audience - I'm wondering if masks are required to attend the show. I know they still are for Stephen Colbert, he showed his masked audience just this week.

And you're right about Neal, but he's such a willing participant - and adds humor - so he's a popular guest to have on.
