3. I was there in the late '80s, went with my grandmother and her peace group

There was so much hope back then under Gorbachev and his more progressive policies And the peace groups were very active there, they suffered such horrors on their own land during WWII that they never wanted to experience that again. I feel for those people now - under Putin, who wants to recreate the worst abuses of the USSR.

We also visited what was then Soviet Georgia (we were originally scheduled to go to Kiev, but Chernobyl happened). The hatred of Soviet occupation was palpable - there were statues of Stalin there which puzzled me, so I asked. And I was told that Stalin was Georgian, not Russian - and he was held in esteem "because he killed so many Russians."
