John Oliver Reveals The Massive Con Of Republican Politics - Ring of Fire

John Oliver, host of "Last Week Tonight", explained to his audience this past weekend what is really at the heart of all of the GOP's politics, and it is nothing more than a massive scam. Echoing the same thing progressive YouTube hosts have been pointing out for years, Oliver said that Republicans create fake problems in order to "solve" them, convincing their base that they've actually done something. But the damage these solutions to fake problems cause is very real, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

This past week on John Oliver's last week, tonight program on HBO, he laid out exactly what the big con, the big GR of the modern Republican Party is. And it's a gr that, by the way, I think pretty much everybody on the left in the YouTube world, ha has pointed out for many years now. But to hear it coming from John Oliver, who has a massive audience, he's got a huge following. For him to put it out there into the ether and explain it in very clear terms to everybody watching is a huge step forward. Because as Oliver explained, what the Republican party of today is doing is creating fake problems so that they can legislate solutions to things that don't even exist. And of course, he used, as a brilliant example, transgender athletes, right? So far, 18 states across the country have passed some kind of law, either about transgender individuals using the bathroom or prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in college or high school sports.

Now, these aren't problems. There is not an epidemic here at the United States of transgender women competing in women's sports and just dominating the hell out of it. There is no epidemic of transgender women using women's restrooms and apparently molesting people, which is what Republicans say is happening. If somebody wanted to go into a bathroom and molest somebody, do you know what they would do? They'd walk into a bathroom regardless of the little sign on the door, and they'd molest somebody. They're not gonna spend years going through hormone replacement therapy, going through psychological counseling, transitioning their body, you know, growing breasts and all those things just so that, Oh boy. Now when finally the day's here, I'm gonna go molest somebody in a frigging bathroom. Nobody on the planet has ever wanted to do that, right? You're not gonna spend your whole life gearing up for this one event. That's stupid. But that is exactly what Republicans are legislating against, and they've done such a good job, as John Oliver has pointed out of convincing Americans that these are real problems. If you look at the polling data, and this is what is truly startling, a majority of people, depending on what state you're looking at, actually support banning transgender individuals from using the, the

Restroom that they identify as they support banning transgender individuals from participating in college and high school sports. It's not a problem. It's not something that exists. It's not something that anybody actually gives a about, but Republicans convinced them they had to, and so they do, and that, of course, is what John Oliver was pointing out. But here's the thing, just because they've created fake problems doesn't mean that the fake solutions haven't had real world consequences. We are taking an already marginalized group of individuals, and we're further demonizing them. We're making their lives more miserable. We're taking away helplines that these people once had, especially in my state here in Florida with the don't say gay legislation, we're making their lives a living hell. Republicans are just to win a couple of political points by talking about problems that never existed in the first place and causing a hell of a lot of suffering in the wake of that.
