That's the kind of snowfall that used to be the norm at higher elevations out here in the Rockies. That's more like what I'm used to but our infrastructure is built to handle it.We only had two decent snow events last winter, we are off to a good start this year.

I hope that there isn't major flooding when it warms up.

Here in the Northeast, we did get our first snow, but then it rained, so the roads are clear and e just have a remnant. But we're not fooled, it's gotten cold, so this is only the beginning.

If the wind switches out of the north or northwest it'll be our turn. Not quite as bad though, because the area south of Buffalo that got buried had the entire width of Lake Erie to gain moisture. We'd only have 90 miles or so across Lake Ontario.

We've had 2 feet of snow in a day quite a few times, but I can't imagine 3 times that amount in one day. That's apocalyptic.

It sure is cold though. Wind chill is around 12-15 degrees, and this time of year is too damned soon for temps like that. 🥶

Stay warm in the north country, Rhiannon.

And that's what happened here, too - it was tolerable weather, wish it could have stayed like that, but it suddenly turned cold and hasn't let up. I remember that it was like that last year, too - comfortable weather and then suddenly it was necessary to bundle up! And it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon - it's winter here in the Adirondacks. But at least we haven't been hit here - yet.

Lake effect snow travels in narrow bands, and, like tornadoes, the exact places to be hit and when are hard to predict. But forecasters can tell the overall region and some specific trends in the bands.

So, although I am farther inland than Buffalo, we got some of the earliest bands on Thursday, up to 2 feet. It came down fast and furious. Another foot on Friday, but then the bands shifted to Buffalo.

While southern Buffalo and suburbs plus outlying villages and towns south of the city were getting hammered, within the city to the north, they got only a few inches at first. More was predicted for the north as bands shifted, but not as much as the south.

The NY Thruway/Freeway (Interstate 90) was closed from Rochester to Buffalo and from Buffalo to the PA border and into northwestern PA. Commercial traffic was banned on all expressways in Buffalo starting around 7 pm on Thursday night. By Friday, a total ban on all traffic was in place in some areas, while less severely hit areas had travel advisories. In the total ban areas, over 400 citations have been issued to people who broke the ban. Some people just refuse to cooperate.

So my area got off easy, but the forecast is for more snow overnight continuing through tomorrow morning as the bands shift again.

I have stayed inside except for a short walk around the corner to a convenience store to pick up a couple necessities.

Relieved to hear that you were spared the worst of it, but have experienced the worst of winter, what you're experiencing is bad enough. We know that Western New York gets hit with snow, but this really sounds like one for the history books!

I'm in the Northeast so we got off easy, the first snow of the season, but then it rained, so it's still on the ground but the roads are clear. I also went to Hamilton College, near Utica, so got a taste of it, but nothing like the Lake Effect snow further west.

Thanks so much for checking in and your account of what's really going on - here's hoping that it lets up so that people are able to dig out - and stay safe out there!

So a lot of the snow will melt, causing basements and sewers to flood.

A few times over the years the lake effect bands have hit my area harder than Buffalo, but not often. Buffalo usually gets the brunt of these storms and we get a downsized version. All depends on which way the winds are blowing when the snow bands hit land. Sometimes it is north Buffalo and suburbs that get it and sometimes, like this one, it is the southern area.

But I was used to snowstorms off of Lake Erie before moving to this area some decades ago. I grew up in Erie,PA and lived for 5 years in Cleveland, both of which are on the lake. However, Buffalo usually gets it worse because of being at the eastern tip of the Lake and receiving ALL of the winds coming across the lake from the west.

It is worse in years when we have a warm autumn because the lake stays warm longer then. Just a couple weeks ago, when the temp was near 70 I said that we were due for a big storm this year.
