John Oliver discusses the Qatar World Cup, the human rights violations happening in the sporting events host country, and what perfection really means to David Beckham.
And here's a "bootleg" version of the show which also contains John's comments on recent events: Includes a detailed look at the ongoing chaos at Twitter; people weigh in on Thanksgiving foods. It won't last long, as usual:

(205,541 posts)I know that some were hoping he'd take over The Daily Show when Jon Stewart left, but this show suits him much better - he can choose any topic and discuss it in depth rather than just dealing with daily headlines. And I remember reading that he really disliked reporting on TFG, no big surprise. And of course whatever he discusses is subject to his own unique brand of humor - even though it's usually a serious subject. I'm just bummed that it's the end of his "season" - appears to be a holiday break.
And I know that a lot of DUers don't have HBO or cable - or even TV, so I make a point of posting his show every week, he's not just popular here, but he sure provides some needed humor!

"PeCaen Pie" was a different thing...

(45,460 posts)Sure, of course they're much better off in the US than the middle east. But still, the concept of paying thousands of dollars for the privilege of having a job is unimaginable to most Americans. Just like being thousands of dollars in debt to your employers is not something Americans even know is possible in our country. (it totally is)
Yet all of that is made possible through contracting and subcontracting to create several layers between wealthy "job creators" and the people doing the work that locals won't. "cheap labor express" is barely the tip of the iceberg. It's the blatant abuse of desperate subservient people who don't have many options.
