It has been nine years since demonstrations in Ukraine's capital Kyiv sent its Kremlin-backed president into exile in Russia.

The protests at the city square were seen as a drastic turning point in the country's history.

I have never believed that Putin attacked Ukraine because he feared NATO attacking Russia. NATO is a defensive pact, not an aggressor. Putin feared the democracy that was succeeding in Ukraine because it was too close to his own doorstep, and Russian citizens might start wanting the same.
