but language acquisition seems to have a finite window, probably within the first 2 years.

Case in point: my irascible rescued tomcat understood Spanish perfectly well but never did learn English.

Yes, I miss the grouchy old bastard every day.

He is a Corgi.

We spend a lot of time in the woods and apparently there is an entire world that he hears and smells that I know nothing about. One time we were sitting on the side by side and he looked up. So I looked up. A hawk had just landed. When he is sitting on the side by side at full alert it is just plain cool. His nose is quivering, his eyes dart and his ears vibrate and move independently. It is his woods and he lets everybody know it is his. He squirts on everything.

We have an interesting relationship because I am not the master. Harper is my friend and he does not always do what I ask, he also teases me and gets mad at me.

I have one problem with Harper that I don't know how to handle. He likes to kiss me and I do not like to be kissed by him. He is clearly showing affection and I am clearly cringing. One of his Native American names is Getoutadat. Dogs eat some really disgusting things in the woods. He will not give me the treasures he finds. No way no how. Although if my wife is around he will give it up for her.

Most of the time when we are in the woods and I say come on lets go this way he will listen. Sometimes he just stands there and looks at me until I go his way. I put dead deer in the back of my woods. It attracts the vultures and they are cool.
Hundreds of them. He insists on checking on the deer every day.

Another of his Native American names is Inaway. Although he is not under foot as much as when he was a puppy. Stumpy, Dopey Dog, Yo. He acknowledges all his names.

I have never had a dog that loves all people as much as Harper. All I have to do is say, Yo want to go to Lowe's and he will spin circles.

Dogs are a gift.
