spot-on. Nowhere more than with guns, btw and I've seen it repeated by a few gun proponents here. If you are legislating and writing the law, then the specifics of how one defines a semi-automatic gun for regulation as opposed to lumping them as "assault weapons" does matter. But, in general discussion, the concept is the damned same thing. Yet, I see it repeated as a condescending talking point even here on occasion. It doesn't matter! When we write the legislation you can get anal about it, but in a discussion of the general policy it doesn't make a damned bit of difference and everyone knows that. It only serves to falsely and deceptively deflect the conversation from any attempts to regulate. As in her car v SUV example, SUVs are a category of car. A distinction without a difference in the general discussion.
