He begged (and, I'm thinking, prayed for) forgiveness for the ugliness of his strategy -- just before he died from a benign but inoperable brain tumor.

Ironic -- but maybe not -- that a honky like Atwater was also steeped in the culture of the Blues and often performed on stage with black musicians whom he considered his friends. (B.B. King being the most prominent of them.)
