There were about 250-300 workers on site. Most of those workers were Spanish speakers. (I am an old white guy) I was taking a break having a cup of coffee, when two sheriff cars pulled into the fenced compound. Within 90 seconds there were maybe 50 workers on the job. I laughed until I nearly cried at the mass exodus. It was like something out of the cartoons. The job literally ground to a stop for the rest of the day.

Working with those men and women left me with a great respect for the workers as good, honest, hardworking family oriented workers. They were there, every day, on time, in good humor and ready to work as many hours as were required to get the job done. They were quick, smart and very fast learners; perhaps that is why they are resented by the right. A significant number of our White workers on that particular job were driven to the site every morning on a jail work-release van, they could not or would not compete with the Spanish workers and, as a consequence, resented them.

We need immigrant; those with and without papers.

3. Desatan intends on using prison labor, but as you pointed out they won't come close to getting

The job done. Besides, there isn’t enough of them. The prison population in Fl is approx 80,000. Even if they used every single person, it’s estimated they would 800,000 to fill the fields, clean hotels and do construction, and they aren’t trained!

the contractors are the ones that are going to be on the hook!

Voting has consequences!!

7. DeSantis continues to prove that he could care less about Florida and Floridians.

He's only in it for himself, money and being president. As for the stupid legislature, they are clowns who haven't a clue. Besides feeling self -righteous about themselves they think they will be getting rewarded. When things start to go down hill with higher prices and less workers, people may see them for the true idiots they are. Keeping my fingers crossed.

8. On new Fla. immigration law, S. Florida farmer warns, 'Get ready to pay more at grocery store'

DeathSantis wants to punish Florida citizens to score points with the MAGA nutcase. Florida now needs to find workers to harvest the crops and build houses

https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/law-targeting-undocumented-migrants-already-affecting-south-florida-farms/

"You're not going to get an entirely American (person) to come out and do the work that we do," said John Alger, C.E.O. of Alger Farms, Inc.

For over 40 years Alger has been in the farming industry, whose family owns over 1,200 acres of land in SW Miami-Dade. His employees do a variety of jobs "some tractor driving, some manual labor, it's hot there's mosquitoes, it's an uncomfortable situation; not easy."

Alger is not concerned about an aspect of the new immigration reform law that requires the use of the E-verify system to determine legal status, he says he hires – when necessary - less than 20.

Angel Leal, an immigration attorney in South Florida, told CBS News Miami the new system which will go in effect starting July 1st, "It's for 25 or more employees and applies for new hires, not existing employees. You must run them thru e-verify within three days, if you fail to comply, you could be fine $1000 a day."

"No matter what, people are scared, and they are leaving (the state of Florida) because they feel at risk," said Judith Peralta, who has been working in nurseries in Florida for six years.

9. Florida Shelves Left Empty After Truckers Boycott Anti-Immigration Bill, 'This is All Thanks to Ron

Several videos have been making the rounds online showing Florida grocery stories left with empty shelves due to workers threatening to strike against Ron DeSantis' recent immigration reforms.

Latin-American truck drivers and workers have pledged to boycott across the Sunshine State after DeSantis signed the SB-1718 bill to crack down on undocumented migrants from Central America.

One TikTok with over 8 million views shows the dairy section of one story entirely out of stock with the caption: "No groceries smh. Sad. These truckers weren't playing when they said they were not delivering anything to Florida!"

One trucker, Gilberto Al Volante, also posted a video telling his followers, "This is a construction site here in Davenport, Florida, 20 miles from Orlando. This is all you see. It's 9 AM. Usually, at this time, there's a lot of people here working - all kinds of contractors doing their jobs. Roofers, of course."
