This is a game of chicken, with Republican and Democrat leaders in the driver's seats, and the American people (not to mention people around the world) in the back seats.

For the Republicans, this is an opportunity to gut social programs and make the USA more like a banana republic (which is always good for business).

For the Democrats, well, they're torn. For the most part, they're also beholden to the 1%, but they have to at least appear to care about the 99%.

Guess who will blink first?
