Its tough to shame or embarrass a Texas Tea Party Republican about how dull-witted they sound when they talk about something as idiotic as secession.
After all, one of the people who led the discussion years ago in Texas was none other than their goofy Gov. Rick Perry Most things in politics really do flow from the top.

(7,515 posts)they represented 0.46% of Texas citizens. Cut me a break...Even if the number of signatures hits 500,000 they will represent less than 5% of the state.

(53,661 posts)He said something like, 'When Texas goes blue, there won't be another Republican president!'
Oh, it's coming. Only bump in the road is if Jorge P. Bush is able to play the part of the Latino idol and appeal to the worst in people, which the GOP always do.
In the mean time, Texas did a good job on the legislature. I didn't believe it was possible, the GOP had stacked the deck so high it seemed impossible.
Stilll a chance.

(19,326 posts)but no such petition exists as near as I can tell from this google search:
https://www.google.com/webhp?source=search_app#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=3&gs_rn=0&gs_ri=hp&tok=NThPRQVXLwdzFRDcrDcZ-w&cp=40&gs_id=3&xhr=t&q=sign+online+petition+for+Texas+to+secede&pf=p&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=sign+online+petition+for+Texas+to+secede&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=beb35076e00e9bcd&bpcl=39580677&biw=1773&bih=919
Not that I spent hours exploring all those links, just the first two... The Texas
petition (along with many other So. states) has already gotten over 25,000 signers,
and has been submitted for WH review, besides I'm not a Texas resident, so I
couldn't have signed it anyway.
oh well. I tried.

(53,661 posts)GOP gerrymandering and tricks. These loud mouths have been there over a hundred years, made a media industry out of this. Never gonna happen.
Texas will be blue again, it's only been red since Shrub beat Ann Richards. Before that, straight Democrat.
This is just a bump in the road, a Republican social experiment. The same model is being tried in many states now. So before we point fingers, we better look closer to home.

(19,326 posts)My anti-Texas rant was just a temporary condition. That is indeed
awesome news about the state legislature.
Also, Texas, after all, did give us Jim Hightower; so I guess they can
stay a USA state; and/or at least allow Jim to take political asylum in
the US if they do secede.

(53,661 posts)Also, I posted in the Texas group a lot of stats that dispute what he said... and not from bagger sources, the official ones.
Texas is loud and proud, maybe too much, but it's more of a powerhouse than people want to admit. I grew up in the progressive years there, and when I moved to a solid blue state, honestly, in a lot of ways it seemed backwards.
But I enjoyed the concepts Panpantonia was working with, I'd send the baggers a ticket to ride anywhere out of the USA. You did read that offer from Canada, didn't you?
Give them each 40 acres near open water, let them build their own homes from scratch, grow their own food, and have no government as all.
It would be just as Beck commanded the cult to do, get the kids out of school, get land, a well, grow you own food and stock up on guns and ammo.
Hey, the thread I read about offering the baggers homesteads in Nunavut, even included used snowmobiles. Too bad about that global warming up there, but hey, liberty and free-dumb has its price!
Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Texas will never secede for the same reason it joined the Union in the first place. That reason is Mexico. Some Mexicans call the border states 'Le Frontiera' which means the frontier.
If they could secede, the state might become part of Greater Mexico. The baggers would be outnumbered. so they'd better polish up on Spanish...

(10,495 posts)DNC like we did with Howard Dean's 50 state strategy, we would be blue already. If the DNC focused on Texas heavy, for the next 4 years, we will be blue for 2016. Then you could forget Florida, Ohio etc., and we could start having clean sweeps of the House, Senate, and the WH! Then it would be Perry who? Secede what? It would be nice to shut their Repug/Tea Party pie holes!

(431 posts)The petition for Texas to go off and become its own country already has more than 60,000 signatures. Impressive. But in a twist, the capital city of Austin has filed a petition to secede from Texas and remain part of the Union should that happen. This is officially getting out of hand. The petition states it is "entirely feasible for Austin to operate as its own state," and adds that remaining in the Union "would protect [its] citizens' standard of living." The drafters might want to go in and correct a few typos to be really taken seriously, but as of this writing, the petition has received more than 5,000 votes out of 25,000 needed for a White House response.

(12 posts)I live in Texas and don't want to be forced to 'move to another country (Oklahoma?) and apply for a work visa in a foreign country (U.S.). Let's just organize and out vote the RWNJ's who are unfortunately most of my family and friends. Texas used to be a great Democratic state and will be again soon. Texas gave the United States LBJ who brought Medicare to the country.
Don't write Texas off yet. Mississippi, let them go ahead an secede.
