The world's best-selling weedkiller, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, a new study has revealed. Its results are published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal in New York. Here, experts discuss the significance of the findings.

2. People are free to choose not to use those products. But I worry about the manufacture.

The damage to the environment where it's manufactured.

I don't use chemicals in my yard. I want to know that my dogs or any stray animal can spend time in my yard and even eat the plants, and not be harmed. Unfortunately, my yard LOOKS like I don't use weedkiller. Oh, well.

3. A choice with Roundup, yes.

Except when the farmers who grow the foods you eat, use it. And with GMOs, there is no choice at all. Not when you don't know whether what you're eating is or isn't Frankenfood since there are no (federal) labeling requirements (+70% of food in the market is GMO'd) -- unless you're growing all your own food.

I can't imagine CALIFORNIA, of all places, not requiring GMO labeling of foods. Maybe it has something to do with...the main food that is packaged or sold is not GMO, but it would be difficult for a manufacturer to know if all ingredients used involved GMO.

But why not labeling with fresh or frozen or canned single ingredient produce? There are no other ingredients to track. Just the apples or the beans or whatever.

I'm not as concerned about GMO as I am about pesticides, though.

7. If the label contains no gene, genes, or plasmids, then the gene for roundup resistance could soon

be in grass seeds, in my opinion. Now just look at the container claim: Weed free soil and root system. The government (its three branches) needs to stop this.

Then right before the lawn needs to be mowed, it rains several inches. The grass seeds move to neighboring lawns and some seeds get to the river from the city drainage system. River water is used to irrigate crops down the line. The grass seed producer, germinates, and are eaten by the first consumers, the cattle. Some company is trying to collect the gene. It cannot find them all because they are hundreds of miles away going through the food chain, food web (energy pyramid). Did someone let the gene out of the first containment field accidental or on purpose to make money or control seeds?

The Earth is a big field. Only man is stupid enough to let the genie out of the bottle in order to cover up a bad mistake.

8. Yes, it worries me that the environment's poisons come into my yard.

I do what I can, but I can't prevent toxins from elsewhere spilling over into my yard. My yard, after all, is part of the world. It's just a little patch w/o any directly applied chemicals. Or harmful organics (organic substances can be poisonous, too).

It seems common sense to me that the increase in cancers in our country is related to the buildup of the various exposures we have to toxins. A little here, a little there...it adds up. Those who are young are at greatest risk, since their small bodies are affected more. My age, although we had DDT and other things, there wasn't the wide use of harmful chemicals everywhere that there is now, so we were spared SOME exposure. I don't have proof of that. It's just opinion.
