PSA: Is misinformation the worst it's ever been with the Hamas-Israel crisis?

?si=4ZzqQVZ5zy-Q9cfL

Mods: since the focus of this video is the role of social media in the dramatic increase of misinformation as a result of the Hamas-Israel crisis, and not the crisis itself, it didn’t seem appropriate for the Israel/Palestine forum, and more appropriate for this one.

Apologies if I have erred.

It’s not dramatic when it’s all fake and has been for a long time. Pre-Trump-presidency with ramped up intensity ever since. See One America News and others repurposing clips and Facebook feed manipulation…

One anecdote used in the video: out of (thousands of) hours and hours of videos posted on social media this week re: Israel, CBS news found only 10% accurate and usable.

No broadcasting rules will do that eventually with the wealth behind the obfuscation efforts. People don’t just decide to lie en-masse at that rate, they do it because they’re paid or convinced to, and the technology to convince people doesn’t work without people paid to make it, refine it, and use it.

All the “productivity” the business world fetishizes and grinds people down for? Here’s the result.

These events affect many countries and involve a wide range of complicated interests and motivations. There are always important historical and cultural aspects. One does not simply boil this down to a 30-minute news segment. Viewers get pummeled with contradictory stories to randomly focus on and interpret however they see fit.

Much more information was misleading and down right lying to us.

The podcasters aren’t claiming government misinformation is the worst it’s ever been, they are saying that the dissemination of misinformation on social media over the past week is the worst it’s ever been.

I know you don’t do nuance, but I encourage you to watch the video nevertheless (the host is a former Obama staffer/speechwriter); it’s quite informative.
