A new study done by an Evangelical organization on young Evangelicals found some rather surprising results. How religious are young people? How religious was I growing up? I guess you have to watch the video to find out!

(44,173 posts)I guess its one thing to counsel abstinence for high school aged kids because of the consequences that can result. I'm fine with that as long as it is supplemented with a safe sex message that also includes frank talk about condoms and contraceptives. Some kids will stay abstinent because they really do have strong convictions about pre-martial sex, other kids remain abstinent because they are socially awkward and have trouble pairing off with a boyfriend or girlfriend. But with far more kids they will have sex, and no lecture from some evangelical "sex educator" will ever change that. Biology is what it is; of course we know how evangelicals feel about biology.
But I am an adult in my mid-30's. I happen to be single, and I'll be dammed if some evangelical loudmouth is going to lecture me about abstinence. Save that lecture for the high school classrooms. I won't hear of it.

They showed us a movie in high school where Ann Landers was telling kids what to do on a date:
"Go bowling, dancing, bicycling...anything but making out."
Her line was that if you are not a virgin female, you are worthless. Boys want sex, and once you have sex with them, they will throw you away like kleenex and never speak to you again. This is also demeaning to boys.
Nobody told me anything different from this bullshit so I believed it until I got to college and found out that god wouldn't strike me dead if I had sex. That was in the 1970s.
The people who say "no premarital sex" believe that a piece of paper, a marriage certificate issued by the state, has magical powers. It will make sexual intercourse holy and good, instead of dirty and sinful, and approved by God. It will make your spouse respect you and love you and not cheat on you.
A marriage certificate will not force somebody to love you or respect you or not abuse you. It is not magic.
They are fetishizing a piece of paper. They aren't living in the real world either.
