It’s time. Join more than 800 mayors and over a million grassroots supporters to demand that Congress step forward with a plan to end gun violence.

as such legislation faces strong opposition in Congress and according to political experts would have a difficult time making it through the Senate. Even if it would pass it would most likely be watered down to the point that it would be no more effective than the last AWB. Of course several more tragic massacres could change the equation but I doubt that anyone whats to see that happen.

The threat of an AWB can be used as an effective bargaining chip in the gun control compromise. I feel that some legislation on gun control will pass but it will not be the dream of those who favor strong gun control and will infuriate ultra right conservatives.

I have long favored requiring an NICS background check for the sale of all firearms. I refuse to sell any of my firearms to a person that I don't know and that person has to have a valid Florida concealed weapons permit. Of course the cost of this check would have to be reasonable so as not to impose a burden on the poorer members of our society.

The only problem I could see with requiring the NICS background check was that it might be a problem for people who live in a remote rural areas of our nation. I was just talking to a visitor who lives in the middle of nowhere in Colorado. He said that he would have no problem getting a background check in that area. In some cases where the nearest gun store was 100n miles away, I would suggest that the local police authorities could easily run the check or perhaps a notary.

I also agree that the penalties for the straw purchase of a firearm should be very stiff and tightly enforced. I would also like to see some public service announcements made that said, "If you straw purchase a firearm and are caught you will go to jail for two years. If the weapon you bought is used for a crime you will go to jail for five years. If the crime is a murder you will serve ten years."

Anyone caught carrying a firearm illegally should also face a mandatory prison sentence. If he is convicted of committing a crime with this firearm the penalty for carrying it should be added to his sentence.

Some might ague that our prison system doesn't have enough room but I would suggest that we have incarcerated a large number of people for mere possession of marijuana and their sentences could be reduced. We should also legalize the sale of marijuana and some other currently illegal drugs as on War on Drugs was lost decades ago and has led to the spread of dangerous drug gangs across our nation.

They wouldn't even approve a Soda Stream ad because Coke and Pepsi had issue with it.
