I didn't like The Deer Hunter because of long drive up the mountain, the long wedding, and the Russian roulette. I think I understand and got some parts right when it comes to joy felt to go to war come back a more depressed person.

If it didn't have those ridiculous or long extended scenes I probably would have enjoyed it more.

I worked one summer in a steel mill while in college. The film depicted it accurately, and I even knew a group of guys that would vacation together and drive from Ohio to Colorado to go deer hunting. The Polish wedding was also accurate, though the one I attended was much smaller. The Vietnam part was bullshit, however.

I've been all over western PA, and I've never found the towering, rocky peaks seen in the film!

Thought maybe I would be the first to post that one. De Niro's performance was incredible. It is one weird movie, I can't stand Jerry Lewis, but it was a perfect role for him playing the asshole that I get the impression he was in real life.

Peace

What a mook.

Here's a fascinating bit of trivia:

The great British director Michael Powell was one of the film's most ardent early champions, but it seems to have also had fans in lower places. 'Henry Hill (the gangster turned FBI informant whose story Scorsese filmed in GoodFellas) told me that the real-life head of the Mob played in the film by Paul Sorvino never went to the movies, he didn't have a phone. He lived like a medieval lord in this villa in Brooklyn. And one night they sort of kidnapped him and took him to see Mean Streets - it was their favourite film because it depicted their lifestyle accurately, they thought. At the same time, the head of the FBI task force that caught this whole Mob told me that the task force's favourite film was Mean Streets . . .'

Outstanding, fast-paced espionage movie set in France. De Niro's portrayal of a hardened, experienced ex-spy is really something to behold.

On the wall at 2:13? That's a poster of a New York Central Hudson, streamlined by Henry Dreyfuss for the 1938 Twentieth Century Limited.

It is positioned in front of the Trylon and Perisphere, the Theme Center of the 1939 New York World's Fair.

It's this picture:
