Johnson earned the moniker "Lying Lyndon" for his behavior in Texas politics. He was a very dirty politician.

He blackmailed Kennedy about his affairs in order to get on the ticket as VP.

Robert A. Caro has published four volumes of his LBJ biography, and hasn't gotten to the Presidential years yet. Yeah, he was full of dirty tricks, but lots of other over-the-top character traits as well.
