(24,324 posts)We went to Manny's in NY. I was maybe 14-15.
I was a big fan of Joe Morello. He had a 4 piece Ludwig silver sparkle set. That's what I wanted.
And that's what I got. My 2nd drum set.
And who was in Manny's that day??? YUP !!
The exact same set up in this iconic video....

(4,492 posts)I'm thinking of the classic giving a child a drum set because you hate their parents. At 14-15 it is a more serious pursuit than giving one to a toddler/early elementary school aged child.
(As much as I can't stand my BIL, I haven't done this for my nieces yet).

(24,324 posts)Well, i am still close to my ex-wife. She remarried and has a 4 1/2year old son who likes drums. He also like the. Violin...Her husband is a good person but too much ocd. Doesn't want his son playing violin because it is too squeeky. Jesus 🤐
maybe i should get her son a small kids drum set.

(36,269 posts)I do own an S80(s.II) soprano and S80 tenor, both kind of opportunistic purchases. Haven't had much chance to play them in years. Hoping to get back into the community band, but alto is my best instrument, and all I have is a junker. Maybe this Spring (after the Christmas music is dead and gone).

(9,730 posts)My cousin got the Brittanicas, so I visited as often as humanly possible. I'd still like to have a set, but they'd only be good for dusting occasionally now and then.

(28,125 posts)a 24 Vol set of Encyclopedia Americana? I've offered them to my sis who lives in another state but if she doesn't accept by the end of January, I'd send them to you for postage +.*
PM me if you're interested. They are bound in white with a black band, gold & black lettering, and in rather good condition for being so old.
We also have a set of Brittanica's which we're keeping. We're moving again and I told hubs that it's nuts to keep dragging 2 sets around with us.
On edit: Not trying to sell here - hubs just said that he wants any takers to pay for the boxes + shipping cost.

(25,375 posts)Brittanica had no photos and biblical thin pages.
I couldn't use it for HW because it was at much higher level.

(205,492 posts)I already did have a bicycle - one I'd inherited from my mother. That's the one I'd learned to ride and I thought I'd have to give that up. Silly me, but then I was a kid. Apparently my mother had sent in more bread wrappers - that's what you had to send in - for my brother than for me since he didn't have a bike yet. But they picked me and I got to go to a local store and pick out the bike that I wanted, very cool. I was pretty lucky - when I was a kid...

(2,404 posts)I wanted an Easy Bake Oven more than anything for Christmas. That year, my best friend got one; I didn't.
I was crushed then, but now am eternally grateful to my mother. I'm a good baker, and I still mentally thank her for making me realize you can't bake a quality cake with a light bulb.

(25,375 posts)Took forever to make a tiny cake. Then you had to buy those little boxes of mix. I think I made no more than 5 cakes.

(38,317 posts)Christmas was always a time of religious warfare in my family.
I had one grandma who wished to celebrate Christmas in the traditional secular 20th century U.S. American way, with a Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, gifts, carols, Frank Capra "It's a Wonderful Life." etc..
The rest of my family was all over the place, ranging from celebrating Christmas is a pagan perversion likely to land a person in hell to I'd rather be out in the field studying ants than here so I'll get drunk instead.
We didn't have Christmas trees, we had spite trees, trees erected to spite in-laws and relatives who didn't believe in them.
My parents had more kids than they could comfortably afford so we never had any high expectations when it came to gifts.
The coolest gift I ever got, from my Christmas celebrating grandma, was an Air Blaster.
They don't sell those anymore because too many kids blew out their eardrums, or got maimed when the springs broke loose.

(82,849 posts)Hey, you know what your household needs? More strife and discontent! Here's the Air Blaster so you can torment your older siblings, younger siblings, parents, kids, and more! Kids, get a 40 foot head start on your justifiably pissed-off older sister. You just might make it to the bathroom in time to lock the door behind you.

(46,336 posts)I found a ball that fit the opening just snug, shot my younger sisters with it at times.
Finally the rubber inside broke.
My Dad said he wasn't going to fix it.

(3,275 posts)I really wanted to go to space camp when I was a kid. I even go the brochure. I didn't ask my parents because of the cost. It turns out that my parents would have gladly sent me if I had asked. It wasn't that much money. It just seemed a lot to me at the time. I wish I had mentioned it to them.

(3,275 posts)Mom and Dad were happy when they finally had a girl. They would have liked to encourage my interest in science. There is a space camp for adults. I plan to go in the next couple of years.
