Then he bought a distortion pedal. I think he ruined his own signature tone.

I play an L.P. straight through a bass amp.

I bought myself a Tube Screamer, just to add a little salt, but it sucked the heart out of my tone. I just couldn't find it anywhere.

I'm back to volume and a slight goose of the gain knob.

Like chimes again.

I use 3 tones.
One is pedal to the metal saturation! I use a Boogie or a Marshall.
Second is still pretty thick, but less bit for rhythm not lead
Third is single coil, thin as tissue paper and jangly as hell!
For jam nights, I have a Vox Saturator which gets that thick Satch sound using someone else's amp set clean. Then all I need is one of my guitars and an old lap top bag. Too old to be moving an amp to play for 25 minutes!

On Edit: forgot to mention that my wife and I saw them on the second album tour. Chicago's Uptown Theatre, 5th row dead center! Mark was 15 feet away when he was at the mike!

I've got access to my brother's Matchless 2x12 in the garage, but really the biggest amp I ever use anymore is a little Line-6 1x10 bass amp. Lotsa beef of course, and a nice round tone, and it scorches the paint offa my bedroom walls if I want it to.

I've got the usual suspects on my pedal board...BOSS distortion and reverb , one of those ancient DigiTech delays (the big blue thing with the two pedals), and an MXR micro flanger. (Oh and now the Tube Screamer.) So with a little tweaking I can get enough of the sounds I want. I only play for fun and never for show anymore.

That Vox Saturator sounds interesting...lol. Just kidding. I've really gotten a handle on my Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

Mostly...
