Stumbled out of bed, no coffee yet, open the door to go to the bathroom, lo and behold, a baby bat just hanging on the wall.

(2,889 posts)freaking out about my 2 cats, got a box and a box top, slid it down the wall, into the box and set the box outside. I think my cats are fine.

(2,889 posts)My mind was racing, how do I get this bat out of here in the quickest, most gentle way? Cats were pretty much oblivious that the bat was even there, if the bat had been flying around that would be another story.

(7,768 posts)This happened to my sister and brother-in-law. There was a bat on the wall of their bedroom. Even though our county has never had a single incident of rabies verified in an animal, it was explained to them that the teeth of a bat are SO sharp and SO tiny, you can be bit while you're sleeping and never even know it.
They started a series of recommended preventative shots. Their insurance paid most of it.
Eventually they found the source of entry for the bats. I witnessed them coming in myself, one after another, through a tiny slit in the metal flashing around a chimney pipe where it came through the roof! Acckkkk!
This tiny hole was a quarter of an inch in size! Yes, 1/4 of an inch!! They can get through a hole the diameter of a pencil!
My sister hired a pest control company and they sent out their bat expert. What he showed us was startling and
jaw-dropping.
There were bats EVERYWHERE! Two different species. They were under the cedar shakes, both side-wall and the roof. They were under the trim boards. Their house was described as a "bat nursery"!
We stuffed the hole in the flashing with steel wool and then calked it. We never saw another bat in the house after that.
Good luck!

(2,889 posts)They went through an ordeal ! I am confident this is an isolated incident, I have been here 4 years come February 2018 and I have never seen a bat before this. I am thinking it is cold outside, got lost, got in somehow and was disoriented. I called the landlord and he was as confounded as I was, no other complaints from other tenants. I checked the cats and myself and it looks like everything is good. Thank you sharing that information and the Good luck !

(50,560 posts)The bats we have in the US are pretty small. This one looks like an average adult.

(2,889 posts)Since I have never seen a bat before up close and personal, it looked rather small to me.
