Yesterday afternoon, I drove the company truck back to my boss' house arriving about twenty minutes before sunset. He has had a pair of harriers (related to hawks) hanging around his house since early spring, and we've seen them many times. I got my gear out and opened my back car door to stow it, when this harrier flies (like a missile! those guys are FAST!) from his back yard, between his house and the neighbor's, and then flies right over my car, maybe a dozen feet above me!
Told my boss it was my 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' moment for the day.......
(they are AWESOME, beautiful birds--love seeing them!)

(12,157 posts)They would be just inches above the high grass following rodent trails, I assume. They would stop and change direction. At the time I though of Harrier Jump jets and was pretty sure these magnificant birds gave those planes the name.
I've read that Kestrels are true hoverers. If the pictures I see on line are correct the birds I saw were much too big. I don't know what happen to our Harriers I just don't see them any more- red tails, sparrow hawks and an assortment of owls but no harriers in years.
