3. When I Heard...

I was watching Monday Night football.

The following description is from the short story,

" Now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall " by Ken Kesey.

" It was the Dolphins against the Patriots, the fourth quarter. It was an important game to both teams, as they fought for a playoff berth, and a tense series of downs. Suddenly Howard Cosell interrupted his colorful commentary and said a funny thing, apropos of nothing discernible on the screen. He said, "Yet, however egregious a loss might seem to either side at this point of time, we must never lose sight of the fact... that this is only a football game."

A very un-Howard-Cosell-like thing to say, I thought, and turned up the sound. After a few moments of silence Howard announced over the play-action fake unfolding on the field that John Lennon had been shot and killed outside his apartment in New York. "

He describes this much, much better than I ever could.

Peace

4. A horrible loss

In 1980, I was in grad school in NYC. For many of us, Lennon's death was a horrible event that cut across many social and cultural areas of life. The public displays of grief were dynamic and powerful.

At the time, I was interning with one of the residents of the Dakota apartment building where Lennon was killed. I was actually invited to the wake! It was one of the most memorable nights of my life, filled with amazing people, sorrow, humor, lots of music, amazing food and drink. The party went on until very late.

Imagine the music he would have made had he lived.
