On this day in 1956, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis were in the studio.

Two different studios, to be clear.

1956 – At the RCA studios in New York, Elvis Presley makes his own recording of Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes.” The top 20 success of the single will unfortunately overshadow Perkins’ own achievement for the remainder of his career.

1956 – At Memphis’ Sun Studios, Jerry Lee Lewis is lending his piano-pumping prowess to Billy Lee Riley’s recording of “Red Hot.”

So, take it away, boys:

Billy 'the Kid' Emerson originally wrote and recorded 'Red Hot' for Sun Records. Last I knew, Billy, a Korean War Vet was down on his lucky and in need of help down in Florida. I sure hope he is alive and well.

has passed away.

My personal favorite version of 'Red Hot' is by Bob Luman. Great song no matter the version.
