In the wild they eat 90 pounds of food per day prior to hibernation for the winter. That would make for a he'll of a food budget.

Acts like a BIG Ol' Teddy Bear BUT wouldn't want to be around him when he gets out of the wrong side of the bed.

We couldn't release them so we had five lifers in our sanctuary. Wonderful critters. We built them a swimming pool at the base of a cliff (huge enclosure built in an old quarry) and I spent many an afternoon chucking fruit and veggies into it for them to dive for. I even helped neuter a couple, which earned me a reputation among staff.

our yard. They are amazing to watch. One spent a whole day just hanging out. I really wish I could have known what he/she was thinking!

Three million people visit Glacier National Park every year, and many of them drive on roads my dad designed. While he was up there doing it, a Black Bear decided to turn the space under my parents’ trailer into his house. They went down to the general store to call the game warden, who brought out a live trap. A live bear trap is 10 feet of 4-foot diameter steel pipe with chain link fence doors at both ends, and it’s on a trailer. They bait it with something smelly, the bear goes in, the doors slam shut, and they tow Mr. Bruin 75 miles away and turn him loose.

They caught the bear the first night, and it sat out there like a 500-pound human infant and cried its beady little eyes out all night.

That would make me sad to hear that all night! Most of my up-close experience with bears has been pretty quiet. I was shocked by how fast bears can run. Most of the time I see them, they are just moseying along, but I have watch one or two scoot across a few lanes of roadway at super fast speed.

It's really cool that you have that connection to GNP. I'd really love to make my way through all of the parks someday.
