That's what freaks them out. Leave the tub drain open, and wash the cat with comfortably-warm water dipped from a bucket with a large mug, for example. Wet down thoroughly, lather, rinse, wrap in a towel. But don't make kitteh stand in water (especially cold water). Wet feet drive them crazy.

...one of the things that freaks them out about baths is the slipperiness and lack of traction on the bathtub floor. The wife started using a towel and giving our cats a bath was made a hell of a lot better. In fact, they seldom fuss now.
