The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHas anyone seen "The Shape of Water" and what did you think of it?
I've read on line that it was a direct ripoff of some older Hollywood movies.
But I would be interested to hear what DUers thought of it!

(32,015 posts)They could have given it an award for Best Cinematography, maybe. But I just wasn't a Best Picture for me.
My son and his girlfriend loved it.

(2,550 posts)The acting wasn't mentionable and the storyline was off the wall. Once she started giving him eggs and dancing, I lost interest.
I don't get it.
How would anybody think it was good?
The acting was so bad.

(40,212 posts)I think it is one of those movies that you're going to either love or hate. I don't know if there is a lot of space in between. I see why people in the industry would love it as it is constructed very beautifully, from the look of the film to the way the story unfolds. It seems that not getting it or liking it at all is a reasonable response. It is a very different kind of movie and it is a bit weird.

(3,496 posts)Cinematic beauty yes but that is it.
Erotic version of beauty and the beast I read one review, ha what a joke two masturbating scenes that could have been done more tasteful.
Main actress friend seemed lecherous One scene tells her to masturbate more.
Her female co worker seemed to be around only to make comedic antidote.
The villain was an over the top cia, fbi, wannabe.
The creature was a mix of creature from the black lagoon and the amphibian character from hell boy. One scene he's in a theater eating popcorn?
Putrid movie.

(12,608 posts)It is an old Universal Horror Classic movie. The creature did take a liking to the female lead in the movie but she was deathly afraid of him

It captured 1962 America pretty well.
Love Guillermo Del Toro's films, he's one of the best director's working today.
Love movies that show us something we've never seen before.

(31,174 posts)When I saw TSOW a few weeks I immediately thought it was a metaphor for how love conquers prejudice and race. The Beauty and Beast analogy up thread is good -- one I hadn't thought of.

(8,055 posts)not my kind of movie. And I was right; it's not my kind of movie. And especially not for movie of the year....

(31,174 posts)though in ten years it's impact will be looked upon as being another love story, albeit a bit unusual. I think something like "Get Out" will take on historical status which, to me, is an important quality to being named best picture or acknowledgment as an achievement in filmmaking. Face it -- the Oscars kind of suck. It's a popularity contest. Artistic merit, especially when risk is involved, is too often ignored.
BTWwe're never told how close the vote is. That would be interesting to know.

(10,892 posts)Let me know if any of this sounds Oscar worthy to you :
* A mute girl fuks a fish and it's considered romantic
* there is a song and dance scene where the mute girl sings and dances with the fish
* the only character with three dimensions is the janitors bucket
* the bad guy ending looked like a Steven King movie
* girl and fish drown in the river and live happily ever after
It was a horrid waste of time for me. I'll never get that time back.
