Any PDXers have any suggestions for things to do or places to eat/drink?

(13,069 posts)I could spend the day at Powel's books. Voodoo donuts is famous. If you want to try one, go to the one on Davis-- it's less crowded.
I love Portland

(3,515 posts)I love Portland too.
There is also a bike and walking bridge that leads to a music center. I like to walk so I like that.
Lots of nature hikes in the area.

(16,954 posts)when we went there. They had just sold it a few weeks (or months?) before we visited. . Lots of other great stuff, though.
edit: Here is the rare inscribed JFK book (The Strategy of Peace) that we looked forward to seeing, but we went sometime in 2011 and they had already sold it, or it wasn't there as I recall: Great history of rare books there! Definitely a must-see.

(15,646 posts)An authentic old English Pub experience. Best Bangers and Mash anywhere.
But really, there are just too many great places to eat in Portland. SE Portland in particular.
If you happen to like vegan, hard to beat Blossoming Lotus on NE 15th ... even non-vegans like that place.
Apizza Scholls if you want a great unique pizza on SE Hawthore (SE PDX) -- but get there early or plan to wait.
Dan & Louis' Oyster Bar is pretty interesting ... and great oysters on the half shell. SW Ankeny near downtown/the river.

(2,162 posts)is a wonderful Italian restaurant on the waterfront. The food, wine and view are spectacular. Do yourself a favor and have dinner there!

(2,404 posts)of the coolest cities in the country, I think. It is beautiful and there is so much to do, too much to list.
OAKS amusement park is a blast, whether or not you have kids with you.
A million restaurants and food carts, most of them good. Personally, I don't care for voodoo donuts, but they are popular. They have an interesting and sometimes inappropriate (for kids) selection. If you check out their website, you'll see what I mean.
Lots of tours. One of the coolest is the PT 658 boat tour. You have to make a reservation. Just google Save the PT boat, Inc.
The zoo, gardens, wine tours, waterfalls, libraries, Pittock mansion, bridges-hope it's a really long weekend! Have fun!

(24,931 posts)Thanks for the suggestions!

(2,404 posts)it's a matter of personal taste, but my choice would be Blue Star donuts & coffee. The best donuts I've ever had, seriously.

(796 posts)do what you can to take interstate 84 eastward through a bit of the Columbia Gorge. Lots of waterfalls, hiking etc-the Gorge is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Breathtaking. My first time driving through was overwhelming. Enjoy! PDX is a great town.

(16,954 posts)we went to the zoo. Loved it. What is funny is that Portland was having a heat wave and we went to the PNW thinking it would be cooler compared to SoCal. Gorgeous area.
geardaddy
(24,931 posts)I think we might go to the zoo.

(3,417 posts)Multnomah Falls is open (nice lunch spot), but the trails are closed. A massive fire last September burned out much of the Oregon side. Fire was started by a 15 year-old throwing fireworks into a tinder-dry canyon on Eagle Creek. Most of the trails will be closed for years.
The drive to Multnomah Falls is still beautiful. Stop at the Vista House (Crown Point) on the way.

(814 posts)Hollywood district. We call it "hipster Chinese" because no Asian people seem to work there.
Clarklewis Restaurant (named after Lewis & Clark) on the east side of the Willamette River from downtown. Never been for dinner, but good for lunch.
Apizza Scholl's (frequent pizza poll winner) on Hawthorne.
Two Bars: Bar of the Gods and the Spaceroom (both on Hawthorne & across the street from each other).
All these places are on the east side of the river, which is somewhat less big-city and tourist-dense than the west side.

(406 posts)Getting around: The Max is very easy to use and goes everywhere. The Portland Street Car is awesome if youre going SW to NW Portland and especially around the Pearl District. You can rent bikes all over the place and they have tons of Zip Cars. Uber and Lyft abound. I usually just park in one of the all-day garages and walk all around if the weather is nice.
The Pearl District is one of my favorite places to walk around for an afternoon. Theres also tons of little shops and food options on Alberta and Mississippi and its a very cool vibe. If you're over towards the waterfront you can hit VooDoo Donuts on your way to or from the Saturday Market, and there are tons of food carts around that area as well. (There's an alley behind VooDoo Donuts if you're walking towards the water, like, go out the door and take a left outside the doors, and there's a row of tiny little bars there. My friends and I often do our daytime pub crawl down that alley.) There are often events at the Waterfront Park right there think beer fests, food fests, music fests. The best market IMO is the Farmers Market at PSU tho.
My fav neighborhood to pub crawl at night starts at Jakess Famous Crawfish, which has an awesome happy hour. Living Room Theaters is right around the corner and has unique movies, live music, reasonable food and drink prices. Ringlers Annex is a cool downstairs bar on Stark, just a couple blocks from Jakes. That whole neighborhood is awesome and on the weekends there's great people watching. The Crystal Ballroom is around the corner and they have great shows there.
If youre into late night fun, there is a whole scene down towards the water with dance and strip clubs. Theyre pretty fun if thats your thing. They have pedi-cabs all around at night and if the weather is good, it can be a pretty raucous scene. (I just walk down there after a night out around the neighborhood above until you find a pedicab and tell them what you have in mind). Food carts all around there too for a late night snack. You can also set up pedicab tours to breweries and distilleries too.
The Doug Fir Lounge is a fab place to see live music.
Ground Kontrol is a cool arcade game place, with food and booze thats fun to go play all your fav old school video games.
OMSI is a really cool museum and has an IMAX theater. I love the Portland Zoo.
Portland City Grill has a really good happy hour, and a cool mix of partiers and biz people (little dressier). Probably one of the best views in Portland IMO.
Ice cream at Salt and Straw is always a must.
Salty's on the Columbia has the best damn champagne buffet brunch I've ever seen outside of the Bellagio in Vegas. It's spendy af and you have to make reservations, but it's a spectacular spread and beautiful view (need a car to get there).
If you have good weather and want to get some nature in: Japanese Gardens, Washington Park, McMenemens Edgefield, Pittock Mansion (grounds are beautiful if the inside isnt open). If you have a car, Multnomah Falls is a sight to see.
Shopping: If you have a car, the Woodburn Outlet Mall is about 30 mins south of Portland and has a ton of stores. I also love walking around the Pioneer Courthouse Square area as there are lots of shopping options there
a huge Nordstrom Rack, tons of shops in Pioneer Place Mall, tons of shops in a couple block radius. Take advantage of no sales tax!
Pro tips: its pronounced Or-E-Gun and Wi-lamb-it
Have fun!!!

(24,931 posts)Thanks for all the suggestions! We're staying at an AirbnB on NE Dekum St. so we'll probably be a bit out of the main center of town. We plan to take public transport (because that's our thing) and we may rent bikes if the weather is nice.

(796 posts)which has lots of great food, beer and shopping. Pine State Biscuits is usually busy but great breakfast/brunch.

(3,417 posts)at Salt and Straw. Go to 50 Licks Ice Cream on SE Clinton Street between 19th and 20th.
Nwgirl503
(406 posts)but I guess I've always gotten lucky. I've never had any issues with a huge wait. I'll hafta try 50 Licks next time I'm up. I'm always looking for good ice cream.

(3,601 posts)On inner NE Dekum you will find Breakside Brewing, which has won awards for its beer and food. And deserves them for both. And the Oregon Pub, a nonprofit nanobrewery and pub that could only exist in Portland. Everywhere, look out for the Sparrowcamel riders.

But that might be helpful to us for other things!
