Trivia: J. Allen Hynek was a famous ufologist and the creator of the diverse kinds of contact with extra-terrestrial life, as explained in his book "The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study" (1972). The first kind: sighting of an one or more UFOs. The second kind: observation of physical evidence of extra-terrestrial visitation. The third kind: contact with one or more extra-terrestrials.

And also: Dr. Allen's son Joel Hynek directed the design of the camouflage for the creature in the movie Predator (1987).

I've known about J. Allen Hynek since the late 1950s, when, as a teenager, I would go to the library and read magazine articles about UFOs, as well as check out books on the subject.

BTW, at the end of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Hynek "can be seen, bearded and with pipe in mouth, stepping forward to view the spectacle." (Wikipedia)

I'm a movie and TV trivia buff and have a real appreciation for some of the details. I'm also into baseball trivia but that's another story.

Another detail from IMDB: In the briefing room scene at Area 51 behind Hiller and Grey there is a night vision pan of the base. What you are seeing are actual shots of the real Area 51 taken by a conspiracy theorist from a place called "Freedom Ridge". The ridge was commandeered by the U.S. government in the late 90s and is no longer accessible to the public.

My 2 favorite scenes are:

- When Billy Bob, dressed as Santa, is eating guacamole salad in the food court, and a mother comes over and says to her little boy, "Look who's here" .upon which Billy Bob shouts at the mother "I'm on my fucking lunch break!" ..with guacamole flying out of his mouth.
The mother responds: "Are you insane?"

- The scene in the boxing ring where Tony Cox is giving "the kid" some pointers about how to protect himself from bullies, and "the kid" kicks him in the balls, after which Tony Cox proceeds to hit "the kid" hard in his stomach, causing him to fall down, and then Billy Bob yells at Tony Cox for hitting "the kid", which results in Tony Cox hitting HIM hard in the gut, knocking him down as well..then, while on the floor of the boxing ring, Billy Bob hits Tony Cox hard in the gut, causing HIM to fall down...at which point, all three of them are on the floor.
Corny as hell but hilarious!

I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp ....I love every one of his movies that I've seen
(Except "Crybaby"..despite Depp's excellent acting job)
He's a very good actor, imo, and I thought he did a good job as Raoul Duke in the 1998 film.

I think Benicio Del Toro is a good actor too, but he just looked way too young to play Dr. Gonzo, especially compared to Peter Boyle's "Dr. Gonzo" in "Where the Buffalo Roam"

BTW,Thompson's character, "Dr. Gonzo" was based on a real character who was a close friend of Thompson's..attorney, politician, novelist & Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta, who wrote "Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo" as well as "The revolt of the Cockroach People"

This will sound totally lame, but I saw it for the first time at a free screening. I was a volunteer at the film festival and got my pass from them. Everyone else in the audience of 200 or so got their passes from the local R&B station. I was the ONLY white person in the audience. I was worried I would laugh at different things and wouldn't get some of the humor. But it was all good. We all thought it was funny.

Yes, I am lame.

This was from a post-WWII movie about a soldier who had been blinded in combat. He broke off his engagement, because, he told a friend, it would be unfair to his fiancée to make her marry a blind man. The friend knew the guy's fiancée was a smart, plucky woman. He helped the blind guy to understand that this woman could not stop loving him just because he'd been blinded, that he would be able to manage most things on his own, and that a smart, plucky woman like her would actually enjoy the challenge of helping him be a success. Then the blind guy sought out his fiancée and told her he still loved her, and she told him she still loved him and was confident in his ability to make his mark in the world. They agreed to get married as planned. The blind guy told her that he had found out about opportunities for blind men to study and achieve. "We are going to be a lawyer!" he said. "Yes," she said. "I bet we are going to be a judge!" Or something like that. I always thought this was from The Best Years of Our Lives, but then it was not in there after all. I think Dana Andrews played the blind guy.

I think Felix was calling Oscar to tell him not to eat hot dogs because "we're having franks and beans for dinner."

Probably my favorite line is:

OSCAR (to Felix)
You leave me little notes on my pillow...I told you a-hundred-and-sixty-eight times..I can't.....
stand...little notes on my pillow!..We are all out of corn flakes - F. U.....It took me three hours to figure out that 'F.U.' was Felix Unger!
