(13,360 posts)I was a cat person most of my life, till I rescued my doggie...now I look at all dogs and feel I can see their personality in their cute wittle faces!
I still love my cat, but dogs are something special...
I love both my dog and my two cats to the moon and back,
but in different ways.

(16,402 posts)Growing up, I always had a cat and my brothers had a number of dogs over the years. I like dogs, too, and always get along well with them, but cats are an integral part of my life.
The other consideration is practicality. I've been a renter all my adult life and dogs can be a big hindrance in finding an apartment; cats are not. Cats are less expensive to own and maintain. They don't need to be walked. They can be left alone for an entire weekend without any problems. They are not aggressive unless provoked and they don't bark.
Definitely cats for me.

(7,809 posts)But for my own pet, I've always have had a cat. They are easier to maintain.
They all love the way I rub their ears.

(6,261 posts)But let's face it, our doggy friends love us and would die for us, while a cat wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.

(115,735 posts)My old cat woke me up in the middle of the night, howling frantically, when my furnace malfunctioned and wouldn't turn off. There are many reports of cats doing things like that - warning their humans of fires and other dangers.

(115,735 posts)and the time I was drowning and he jumped into the pool and dragged me out and gave me CPR, and the time I was choking and he did the Heimlich maneuver, and the time both of the pilots of the airplane I was flying in had eaten the fish and got sick, and he clawed his way out of his carrier under the seat, ran up to the cockpit, took the controls and landed the plane? Huh? Huh?
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)It's a well known scientific fact that a cat's paws don't have sufficient reach to simultaneously operate all the controls necessary to pull off a successful landing. This clear error makes me doubt the other confabulations in your post as well.

(4,492 posts)I don't mind dogs, but I've been increasingly frustrated at bad dog owners who bring their (pet) dogs into places they shouldn't be (grocery stores, etc) and think it is cute when the dog misbehaves. It is the responsibility of the dog owner to train their dog properly.
I don't want to be ambushed by a dog either. And there's a special place in hell for dog owners who let their dog shit all over the place and don't clean it up (on public property). I'll never forget cleaning up dog shit in the domestics department of the store I worked in (big box).
Good dogs can be great (never had one). But I don't see people getting away with this kind of behavior with cats.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,735 posts)I love both cats and dogs. I've only ever had cats because of my living situation, but I'd get a dog, too, if I could. Both critters are wonderful in their own ways. Although it may be that one or the other makes a better companion for you, if you don't love dogs AND cats there's something wrong with you! Actually, all animals are wonderful.

(9,904 posts)One dog growing up, received on my 1st xmas, lived until he was 21 years old.
IF I could I would have both species in my home.
But cats, they are the easier species

(9,267 posts)I like other people's dogs but don't want one of my own. Used to think I did until I spent a week living with my granddog while my daughter and family were on vacation. She was about a year old then and wanted attention constantly, which cats don't do. I love her and she adores her MomMom but visiting is great.
