husband used to make great split pea/ham soup.
ONE year, the ham bone was 'rescued' from the trash by some outside critter, and we saw it somewhere in the yard!

to season her beans.
Her in-laws are Kurdish Iranian and do not eat pork (they are now Christian but still don't eat pork)
We made Hoppin' John for New Year's for them using the smoked turkey leg in the black eyed peas and they loved it.
