My childhood beastie was the Boogeyman (family from Baltic States) who would come in the night to scare you if you were bad and maybe take you away if you were really bad. "You better be good or the Boogeyman will get you!"

If you were bad... he would come down into the house and find you and drag you back up into the attic while you kicked and screamed. Then punish and torture you because you did something naughty. Joe-Go was an unimaginably horrible and frightening thing to even consider. The contemplation of him was enough to scare you out of your wits.
