I need help tracking down a recent high-profile murder trial
For the life of me I don't know why I can't remember...
I think this was either in Washington State, Oregon or maybe Colorado or Minnesota but I know it was out west... Some 30-something affluent housewife shot her husband under shady circumstances sometime in the middle of the last decade (2005?), she alleged abuse but wasn't believed, got convicted with a heavy sentence, but this one freelance journalist lobbied tirelessly for the conviction to be overturned (his whole series about the case appeared in some alt-weekly) and it finally reached critical mass and she either got an overturn or an early release the early part of this decade (2012?) after only serving only 5-6 years...
But the huge scandal afterwards was this freelance writer working so hard to right this wrong became romantically involved with the housewife and because of a total lack of oversight from his editors he was able to keep this a secret until he and the housewife themselves got married like two weeks after her early release...
Can anybody help? The journalist's career is obviously over forever so I think he's just a blogger now... I think he even wrote a book about the whole ordeal?
