This reminds me of an argument Daniel Pickering Walker made, though I don't know if it's still considered valid nowadays:
He postulated that the protestant revolution was caused in response to the church and the population moving away from the classic pious church and to a more laissez-faire church. The Protestants didn't want a reform to something new: They wanted a return to the good old times of simplicity.
