We Were Soldiers

How realistic was it ? I've already read the wiki article on it and they totally glossed over the fact that, supposedly, Lt. Col. Moore refused to be airlifted out of the battle twice (by my recollection). If that's true, isn't that grounds for a court-martial ?

Deleted to fix stupid spelling mistakes.

I had the honor of having Bruce Crandall, the pilot that was awarded the MOH and was the helo pilot Snakeshit, over to my house. He said the movie is pretty close to the truth with some hollywood stuff thrown in. He never mentioned that Col. Moore wanted out, though as most MOH recipients he doesn't speak much about the day he received the medal for.
I've meet 17 MOH recipients and not one ever came off has having performed some great feat. They all feel, everyone of them, that they hold the medal for all the service members that they served with.
I know there is discussion about whether the latest recipient was truly deserving, lets not start second guessing everyone based upon rumor or people with an agenda.

I like the delete function.

If it's true that Westmoreland wanted Moore back in Saigon, Westmoreland must have been pretty forgiving of Moore (and understanding).

Most of the receipts are a riot when they get away with a small group. Col. Barney Barnum had us rolling on the floor with his wit. Also love the story's about his hanging out with Black Sheep sqd Poppy Boyington. Also Jack Lucas, the youngest Marine ever to receive the, the medal, was a real comedian. Gave me a small vial of sand from Iwo Jima from when he went back with a group a bunch of years ago. Go to

http://homeofheroes.com/moh/war/15_wwii.html to read about these great men and woman who put their comrades first before their own welfare.

If you ever get the chance to meet one of them don't hesitate.

I'm not sure I could. Adm Nimitz said it best about Iwo Jima, "Of the Marines on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.

I cried from beginning to end. I know it is unPC to like Mel now but, damn the man made some good movies in his day.
