(114 posts)This happened a few weeks ago. Play was good. I had a play similar when pitching softball. The ball hit my thigh and went straight to the first baseman on a fly who stepped on first and got the batter and the man on first out. No umpire in that play but was quirky.

(17,133 posts)Have you ever seen a crazier double play than this? In the Dayton Dragons Class-A baseball game, a liner hit off both the pitcher and in-field umpire before the shortstop picked up the ball and completed a double play.

(17,213 posts)Each field position is numbered 1-9; if a player throws (or deflects, in this case) the ball to the guy who makes the putout (tags the runner with the ball, or steps on a base for a force-out), then he gets an assist. It counts as a "chance" for his fielding stats, along with putouts.
So if the ball is hit to the shortstop and he throws the guy out at first (a play that only happens, oh, 300 times a season or so. Per team), it's scored as a 6-3 play, assist to 6, putout to 3.
