At their height I just wanted to cut my arms and legs off.

I feel for you, good luck.

Your body reacting to the virus. I had the flu in Jan. and got hives on my hands and arms. Since then I've gotten a few when I had a cold. Horrendously itchy and then it goes away.

I think these may be stress induced. They are continuing to slowly spread in spite of antihistamine. Unless they internalize I think I will just have to wait it out.

I had a case last year just on my arms and legs and even with Benadryl they kept erupting.
The itching was insane and I still have some marks left on my shins where they were.
My outbreak lasted for about 3 days.
I did a lot of research online and ended up eliminating sugar/carbs for about 3 months, this also included certain fruits and starchy vegetables.
Any skin eruptions this is advised for, there was also a lot mentioned on the liver which needs to be cleansed when the skin is involved.
I didn't want to do a liver cleanse so I just did the elimination and drank plenty of water.
Hopefully this is a one time occurrence for you and remember that Benadryl stops working after awhile.

Broke out in hives on my torso, arms and legs. About 15 large, itchy spots.
I had also had more than a few alcoholic drinks, including some high-end
cocktails with exotic ingredients.

At first I thought the cocktails were the culprit, but after reading some
blog posts from "keto" dieters, I believe that the sudden re-introduction
of carbs was to blame.

Went back on the low carb diet and they eventually subsided.

It’s gone though and the eruptions are slowing. I have scaled back on sugar but eliminating it completely? No chocolate? Oh dear.

doctors don't seem to be aware of this. Fortunately, my dermatologist did.
