Last edited Thu Jun 7, 2018, 10:47 AM - Edit history (3)
he hasnt been on for a while, since the switch to du3.
i didnt know him well on du, but i bumped into him on fb, and have gotten close to him the last year or so.
the other day he got some very sad news- he has an aggressive form of als. he is a viet nam vet, and this is a service related disability, caused by agent orange.
he was in good health last summer, but over the winter had many weird symptoms, and finally was unable to breathe easily or walk.
he is in the v hospital in portland, or.
he doesnt know i am posting this, and i hope he is not mad at me. but i thought a thread w good wishes from old friends would cheer him up.
if you have a good story about him, please share for the younguns.
i will share this w him when it get to the top of the greatest page, which it gosh darn well better.
update- cliff has been aware of this thread, but is currently being poked and prodded.
he is a little overwhelmed, tho.
so lets keep it going.
update 2- i talked to cliff last night. he is going to try to log in today. he isnt sure he knows his password any more, but his account is still listed as active.
this thread has def cheered him.
it has fallen off the greatest, but lets try to keep it going here in the lounge.

(16,254 posts)sad news. You are right, it is a service-related disability. My husband was a Marine and also had it.
I wish him well and the blessing of excellent treatment at the VA hospital.

that you are having health problems.
I have forgotten so many who left DU that most times when someones name comes up I don't recall them. I do remember you. I wish you had stayed with us.
Take care. Best wishes for a good recovery back to how you felt last summer. When better come back to say hi if you are so inclined. It would be great to have you post again.

Spent 13 days in the hospital BUT I did get my speech back. The nurses came to my house...for several weeks, and I am
doing ok.
I hope things work out for you I will be thinking about you and hope the weird symptoms go away!!
You are a nice guy mopinko....he will be surprised and I hope happy to get some stuff from other DU's.

(83,130 posts)I received a msg about this tragedy and felt I have to chime in.
I'm not sure what to say; I have a VA appt tomorrow, but it is not for anything life threatening, (I hope).
We all age and are often afflicted by things we came into contact with in our past, never thinking of future
ramifications. Ever wonder why colonels never beat the brush? They lied to the rest of us so we could
die and not them. It's always that way in the military.
My heart goes out to all of my fellow vets, after all president "bone spurs", or is it "brain spurs" is a
chickenhawk who can't get all four of his feet out of his mouth.
But I digress, my heart goes out to my brother in arms and his family. I wish there was something I could do.

cliffordu, your presence is missed here, I remember lots of funny threads between you and grantcart. sorry you are going through some rough stuff right now, but know that you have a ton of good support still on DU. for all its faults there are still a lot of good people attached to it and they are pulling for you.

(2,739 posts)I remember Cliffordu! A good guy. DU in those days had a warm culture that I miss, and Cliffordu was a big reason I liked DU so well. (Not to mention the mental image of a big friendly red dog his posts evoked!)
Not sure he'll remember me. I couldn't re-establish my original DU identity after the hacking so had to start over, but my current name is quite similar to my original one. Plus, I was unable to be on DU very much what with papers to grade and lesson plans to do all the time.
I hope very much that the diagnosis is wrong, Cliff! We here at DU send you love and prayers!
