Native Americans who lived along its southern shore called the lake "Erige" which means cat because of its unpredictable and sometimes violently dangerous nature. Lake Eries nasty storms have claimed no less than 1,400 ships and as high as 8,000 according to one estimate. Some say, Lake Erie has more "wrecks per square mile" than any other freshwater location on earth.

(15,805 posts)I live in the desert, the sea both fascinates and terrifies me. Several years ago I was in Los Angeles area after some big storm and my sister and I went to a restaurant overlooking the sea. The waves were gigantic, monstrous huge and the noise of deafening, just watching from the safe vantage point of the parking lot was scary. Lunch was not a relaxing experience.

Great food and atmosphere back then. (except for sawdust and peanut shells covering the floor).

(15,805 posts)Its not the unusual tourist restaurant, more of a local place with a mixed menu of surf and turf. I like the oysters, always a treat.

(32,010 posts)My husband fishes Lake Erie, you absolutely have to check the Marine forecast before you go out, AND have a radio because it's notorious for kicking up on a moment's notice. I've been on his boat when there were 2-4 ft. waves and that was scary enough!

Those are the most dramatic, chilling, angry-looking waves I have ever seen.
Fantastic photography! Thanks for posting, packman.
