My Peony plants are starting to bloom, and anyone with experience knows how much ants LOVE to infest Peony flowers. And they also know how heavy the flowers become when it rains. The plants can pretty much can bend in half and flowers are ruined. So, in advance of the storms forecast for the next few days, I cut some blooms and brought them into the house. They will stay on the enclosed porch until I'm relatively sure no ants were hiding in the petals.
The blue vase was my Mom's favorite. I think it looks pretty spectacular with the bright pink blooms.

(26,268 posts)I was, for most of my life, an apartment dweller with a few potted plants. When my Uncle and Aunt died I inherited their house which came with a BIG lot. There were a LOT of big flower beds so my sister used to come by and help/advise me with planting. She was an amazing gardener - also self-taught. After he retired, my Uncle went a bit overboard with the planting spaces. In the end it killed him because he died of melanoma.
I am slowly but surely feeling more confident and in control, so I'm shrinking and transforming the gardens and plants into more of a reflection of me. I have no desire to spend 18 hours a day working in the yard/gardens, which is what my neighbors said my Uncle did. I do have a desire to grow flowers to attract birds, bees and butterflies. Ants, not so much, but that's a losing battle!

(31,392 posts)I used to have peonies when we lived in Missouri. It was a challenge bringing them in the house and hoping the ants hadn't gotten into them!
