and in the summer we have mosquitoes and poison ivy, but one thing we don't have any of is fucking scorpions!

I'm sure it's lovely where you live but I'm staying here, where there aren't any scorpions.

in his entire career, and they probably came in from the south on produce. We get harmless pseudoscorpions but not the real ones, which aren't even included on the DNR's list of native insects. I'm quite confident I'll never find one in my bed or on my TP roll. However, I can supply you with all the mosquitoes and black flies you need.

And lavender plants.
Apparently the scorpions don't like it. And the bonus? Your bed will smell great and you will be calmer.

I do have a bar of lavender soap in a drawer near the bed, and a plant outside - it is one of my favorite scents, I will have to find some oil - worth a try anyway!

Then, in talking to friends here, found out that it does work.

And I just did a quick search and found this http://texashillcountry.com/lavender-natural-repellent-scorpions/

Being in the Southwest, I've had a few....interactions.... with them myself.

A co-worker opened the door to a remote site, and had one drop down the back of his neck when he went through. He spent a few days in hospital after that. He was always very careful about the doors, too.

I was at another remote site one night, and picked up a piece of test equipment and had one go running for the door. Scared the crap out of me, it was right next to my hand. That was just a couple weeks ago.

I regularly see them skittering across the floor of my sites when I open the door and turn on the lights.

And rattlesnakes: I've seen them in pink, green, and black, aside from the 'usual' color scheme.
There's some info that they're not rattling as much anymore. It seems that the ones that buzz tend to get killed, so there's a bit of selection going on toward not giving the warning rattle. No warning if you're getting too close. THAT'S getting scary.

Once you've heard the rattle, you know what it is. It makes a sort of primal reaction that causes my hair to stand on end. And I don't have a lot of hair. =8-0

these days it is actually more unusual for one to buzz at you. and yeah, that is scary.

get a blacklight flashlight, they are kind of fun to hunt scorpions with. interestingly, momma fluoresces (is that a word?) but the babies don't. I am tempted to make a terrarium and see when they start to do so.
