(8,308 posts)I'll BBQ some ribs and fry up some purple potatoes I got at the Farmer's Market Saturday. Yum. And some of these.. I'll be able to see the local fireworks display from my patio, so that's a plus.

(9,265 posts)He'll be 60. Actually we never do much entertaining (or drinking) on the 4th because we play in a community concert band and have our towns big July 4 band concert and fireworks shindig. Tons of patriotic music. I love playing in the band but the patriotic crap turns my stomach anymore.
MountainMama
(237 posts)I play in a band as well. Last week at rehearsal, the director pulled out the national anthem and I just couldn't play it. I faked my way through it.

(50,557 posts)Strangely enough, I have the Fourth off this year - it falls on a Wednesday, which is one of my days off.
However, I live on the city's parade route...so it's either get out of the fart sack at 3 am so I can get out of town before they close the streets, or stay in place until 11 am when the parade ends.
I may drive to Wallace and walk the Pulaski Trail - three miles up the side of a mountain to an abandoned mine opening.

(54,378 posts)But I have been invited by Amerika-Haus Rheinland, a bi-cultural organization, for an informal evening of cookouts, discussions, etc. with German officials and the US Consul-General down in Köln (Cologne), so I'm going.
Originally, my wife was going to come with me, but she can't, so I am taking a German friend who used to be Station Chief for West German Radio News in Moscow for 5 years. He is very interested in the USA but has never been there. I can't stay long, though, as I have to be at the Düsseldorf airport at 6:00 the next morning.

(54,378 posts)But she is a volunteer board member of the Save The Children initiative here, and they had an important strategy meeting planned for this time slot months ago, and she had completely forgotten it. As it is, she is still up north with her mom, trying desperately to find her some round-the-clock care. She was planning to come back this evening, but just can't get everything set up, so she is staying to tomorrow early afternoon, and then hoping she doesn't run into enough traffic to make her late for the meeting.
I am meeting some people from the Ukraine tomorrow morning, but should be done in plenty of time to meet our friend in Köln and get to the venue. I had to clear him, but when they heard who he was, it took all of maybe 3 minutes (now you KNOW the government wasn't involved!).

No special food is planned and it is too damn hot outside to do much. TJ gets off work at 7:30 tomorrow morning which makes the day difficult. A drive up to a hill overlooking the city where we would be able to see fireworks at multiple locations is a possibility.
That's it. Boring aren't I.

(16,254 posts)I was trying to rectify an error on my Medicare record where they were still listing my auto insurance company as the primary insurer after an accident in 2015. I have been on the phone since 11:00 with them and if they thanked me once for my patience, they did it 137 times. My left ear is burning and I still have ONE MORE CALL to finish the process.
WOW!
Happy Fourth of July to all the DUrs. Meet you at the Civil War.
NOTE: One saving grace during my marathon calls to Medicare is that I was able to spend time reading the Civil War love letters home. There is a lot of talent with Democrats. Some of those are classics. If you haven't read them, do so. They will give you a chuckle.

(5,914 posts)I watched another documentary about him a while back, hosted by Michael Keaton (who got his start in show biz working for Mr. Rogers), and so I was familiar with much of the material already. But this film had a lot of footage I had never seen before, along with insightful interviews with his family and coworkers. It dealt more with his philosophies and what shaped him rather than the nuts and bolts of making his shows.
This movie does make you weep, in parts. You really see how far we've fallen as a society, but it reminds you that if a Fred Rogers came along once, we can all be that way again.

(22,252 posts)It is the one place in FW where I can find BBQ like we ate back in KY on the 4th. Also Red, Hot and Blue has the absolute finest potato salad I have ever eaten; I even like it better than my own; and the best fried okra in town.

(9,729 posts)I refuse to check a bag, so packing is an art...getting the most possible stuff into two bags, one for overhead and one for under the seat. I've pretty well got it figured out, though. This will be my first trip out of the US since 2007. I'm really looking forward to it.

(2,682 posts)Daughter and her husband bought four flats raspberries, two flats blackberries and two flats tayberries (a local hybred). I've put up ten jars so far. Probably will do ten more before I go to bed and the rest tomorrow.
I make enough jam that I only need to do it every two years. When my daughter was young (she's 50 now) I used to do a lot of canning. Raspberry, strawberry, peach jams as well as corn, peaches, plums (cousin had a tree), apricots, tomato juice, spaghetti sauce and I don't remember what else. There were shelves full! I was married at the time and I had a full time job. Can't remember why I bothered making my own. The family seems to still like the jam and being retired, I have few demands on my time. They will all be at a cookout tomorrow and I'll have the kitchen to myself!

I'll walk around the nearby lake a couple of times at roughly 9 PM. Residents always have major fireworks displays above that lake.
Then I'll go back home and recline by the pool listening to more fireworks but not actually seeing many of them.
That has been my standard July 4th fare since my dad died in late 2012

(34,136 posts)I thought about buying some hamburger meat and cooking one for my dinner, but I had a pizza in the freezer so I got a can of anchovies and treated myself to pizza for the first time in six months.
My husband drove to Panama City to spend the last holiday at his childhood home. His Mom died last year and they are putting the house on the market in the next few weeks. He and his siblings were planning a cookout, packing up stuff, and then going to the bay to watch the fireworks.
I hate fireworks (though we've got our share going off in the neighborhood) and my back wouldn't let me ride the hours in the car or on folding chairs at the old house. Staying home, watching TV, and working on needlework was more soothing.
