Has anyone watched "Turn: Washington's Spies" on AMC?

My wife and I are looking for a new series to binge watch on Netflix, and Malcolm Nance recommends this in his latest book. The reviews about it seem to be good overall, but I wanted to hear about it firsthand from DUers who've seen it.

Still, I love period pieces and thought it a good production.

Parts of it were good, a few parts silly as it got into soap opera territory and the trial stuff. Later on it got better as it got more into spycraft. Just my take.

I'm big into World War II, so I'm always disappointed by movies and TV shows about it. No one ever gets it absolutely right. I can forgive a little playing fast and loose with history over flat-out bad acting or stupid writing.

First rate production. Excellent acting. Only slightly loose with history, but it wasn't meant to be a documentary. If you like American Revolution related things, check it out. It might take an episode or two to grow on you.

Although, I took a break during, I think, season 2 when I knew (from historical record) one of my favorite characters was coming up on his tragic end.

I rejoined the show after my husband said it was over.

It comes to kind of an abrupt end, as it was planned to run for 5 seasons and only made it to three, so the last episode kind of compresses two seasons into one episode.

But overall, I recommend it!!!

When you see the final episode, you'll know what I mean.

It is a really good show, you'll enjoy it.

It's a bit graphically violent at times, but it is about a war, after all.

What I really liked about it was its honest depiction of the complexities of the situation.

The British are not monsters, and are often very conflicted about their loyalties.

As are the Americans. They have their reasons for being Loyalists, or Revolutionaries as the case may be, and they aren't necessarily always good or bad.

We always watched it with the subtitles because of the interesting (and historically accurate) mix of dialects.
There are a range of accents, including Dutch, German, African, and Native American.

Which is violent as hell and takes place around the same time period. We are both history buffs.

So this sounds like it's right up our alley.

and Burn Gorman as Brit. Major Hewlett was outstanding as was Heather Lind as Anna Strong. As the series went along, I googled and read about the real life history of the various characters. As others have mentioned, the series presented the complexity of motivations and characters involved.

I saw him as a truly tragic figure.

But, in the end he really showed himself to be a quality human being.
