The fabric looks heavy, along with being sopping wet, it must take a lot of skill to manage not to drown.

I also imagine that most people back then couldn't really swim. Look at the ropes. If they somehow lost hold of the ropes and were in all that heavy clothing, it would have been extremely perilous.
Still, I love looking at old photos. They looked like they were having fun!
