There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in New Zealand by introduction. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to the Americas (the extinct genus Amphechinus was once present in North America.

Some people may have them as pets, but they are actually banned as pets in several states.

More than likely the culprits are squirrels, rabbits or chipmunks.

We have one (or more) family of chucks here. I watched the babies playing (and eating the plants) in my backyard.

I moved the plants to a safe location and fed the woodchucks. They are fond of strawberries and cantaloupe.
