REALLY? - Mayonnaise haters???

"Of all the condiments out there, a fierce hostility toward mayonnaise is definitely the most prevalent. It’s one of the most divisive foods, on par with cilantro, blue cheese and coconut. But the hatred for what is essentially emulsified egg yolks, oil and some kind of acid (typically lemon juice, or vinegar) goes beyond the polite declining of a tuna sandwich: It’s a force that bonds people, either as a comfort or, in some cases, a means to control public mayonnaise options"

As a lover of all things mayo and growing up with the various salads - egg, ham, tuna, chicken, etc. AND especially that apex of culinary delights a BLT with mayo slathered on the toast bread of the sandwich - I am drawing the line between me and thee who hates mayo. Begone---

Then again, my hero President Obama belongs to that group - well, there's always exceptions, of course.

the name changes on different sides of the Rockies, but people claim Hellmann's is a little better. We get Best Foods in Washington, but got Hellmann's in Michigan, and I keep meaning to get a little jar of each and do an actual comparison.

Mayonnaise is also really, really easy to make. We always added a little salt, pepper, vinegar, and then a pinch of dry mustard. I've tried making it with olive oil, but you need to be really careful to get the right olive oil; otherwise, the mayo is just bitter.

bottle of mayo? Mayo is repulsive.

How I came to hate mayo. When I was a little 5-yr old boy, my family was very poor. So, my mom took us out for picnics, where we would watch the workers cutting and loading sugar cane. The usual food was mayo sandwiches. That's where I learned to hate mayo. The last mayo I ever willing ate gave me the worst pain in my guts that I ever had -- I believed that I would die. There under a tree, with the cane cutters watching, I was working every way possible to eliminate that mayo sandwich. That was 73 years ago, and the only memory I have of being five is that damn mayo sandwich. Today, I will eat mayo only if it is spread on bread, less than one "molecular" monolayer thick. If I can see any evidence of mayo, I become unable to eat it. If I can't see it but have a strong suspicion that mayo is present on my food. I can eat it only by covering it with generous amounts of mustard. And that is how I came to love mustard. Mustard, the gift from the gods. I like to take the little single serving packets, open them, and squeeze all the mustard into my mouth. Especially refreshing when I suspect that I have accidentally eaten some mayo.

41. Mayo turns in heat
Wed Jul 18, 2018, 04:21 PM
Jul 2018

I'll bet you had a food poisoning episode with that mayo sandwich. It will cause stomach distress of the worst kind if left out for any period in the heat. Learned that from a potato salad experience that we didn't keep cool at a picnic- has to do with the protein. BUT MAYO in and by itself DOES NOT cause food poisoning.

To wit:

Mayonnaise does not cause food poisoning, bacteria do. And bacteria grow best on foods that contain protein and are at temperatures between 40-140 degrees F. Commercially prepared mayonnaise is safe to use. At greater risk for developing bacteria are the foods mayonnaise is commonly mixed with for picnics and potlucks, such as pasta, potatoes, eggs, chicken, or tuna. But even these will be safe if you keep your cooler below 40 degrees F.

I'll never make that mistake again. From now on, it's honest American grocery-store mayonnaise. Living west of the Rockies, I'm relegated to Best Foods mayo, instead of Hellmann's.

I took my niece down the Coast Highway a few years back. There was a big mobile film crew doing some shoots. They said they were shooting iconic West Coast locations in prep for the rollout of Hellmann's on the western side of the country. I keep waiting for it to happen, but it hasn't yet.
